It’s fairly common knowledge that the success of a business relies heavily on how well the employees perform. However, the employees can only perform well when the management uses the proper techniques to guide them.

Be the Example of What You Want to See

You’re the leader of this company, and you should act like it. Whatever standards you apply to your staff, you should meet and exceed in your own work as well. This also applies to your professional demeanor and behavior.

Showing up late to your shift shows your employees that it’s okay to be late to theirs. Losing your temper with an employee or, worse, a customer shows that the rest of the staff can, as well. If you become the worker you want to see, your staff will follow your example.

Publicly Recognize Good or Hard Work

If a member of your team does a tad particularly well or goes above and beyond the call of duty, make sure your staff knows about it. Publicly acknowledge the hard work being done with vocal recognition or a reward of some sort. Give your staff goals and standards to work toward.

Make sure that you’re consistent with rewards, though. Don’t allow the appearance of playing favorites to set in, as this can lower overall morale while only boosting the morale of one or two employees.

Consistently Discipline Undesirable Behaviors

On the same note, if a member of your staff does something uncouth that will damage your company’s reputation or image, they need to be disciplined. By consistently rewarding good behavior and discouraging the bad, your employees will see that they are all equal and treated the same based on their actions.

Nothing will frustrate you, your staff management team, and your employees like terrible or inconsistent communication. Set clear expectations or your staff and make sure to communicate these expectations well and frequently.

Frequent, clear, thorough communication is critical to the success of your business. This applies to any kind of communication, whether it be face-to-face, email, text, phone call, or letter. The clearer and more thoroughly you communicate with your staff, the fewer incidents of miscommunication you will have.

Be As Transparent As Possible

Transparency is important. You can keep certain records, plans, and more private, and may decline to answer some things where necessary. But know that the more transparency you display, the more your employees will trust you. Don’t lie to your employees or withhold information that is not private.

Prioritize Employee Development

Help your employees to help you. Your business management consulting skills will help to improve employee and customer relations, but that works best when your employees have some input on what’s going on.

Make sure that your employees have ways of achieving their career goals within your company, and make sure you know what those goals are so you can help guide them in the right direction. Have your management team and your employees work on bridging skill gaps that might keep them from their goals. This will also help your business as it currently stands, as employees with a wider range of skills are often a better investment than those unwilling to improve.

Thoroughly Train Your Managers

If your business’ management team isn’t properly trained, how can you expect the employees they manage for you to be well-trained? You can’t, not realistically. Make sure that your managers are properly trained, and give them the tools that they need.

You want your managers to be able to perform well and train their teams of employees well. If a manager has an under performing team, you may need to evaluate the situation and figure out what the root of the problem is.

Focus on Improving and Maintaining Morale

Many businesses and employers overlook the value of morale in the workplace. When morale is low, employees feel no motivation to perform their best; when it’s high, they’ll want to do their best and will enjoy their work more.

It’s therefore imperative that you take proper steps to make sure your employees are satisfied with their jobs.

Don’t Hinder or Overcrowd Your Employees

If you want your employees to do the best job they can consistently, you need to leave them alone. Don’t micromanage them, don’t hover over them if not absolutely necessary. After all the training and coaching is done, the best way for your employees to grow and improve is to let them face challenges on their own.

That’s not to say you can’t assist them when asked, or that you shouldn’t guide or direct them. But give them their task, some pointers or direction if necessary, and then let them work. You can’t run a business effectively if you feel the need to micromanage every employee.

Additionally, this will give your staff a sense of responsibility over their work, and responsibility breeds pride. This will encourage them to work harder and more efficiently in an organic way.

Retain Excellent Employees and Remove the Bad

If you follow the tips listed above, you should have a wide pool of excellent employees and management that will only improve your business. However, you will likely still have some bad apples in the bunch.

If an employee is not a good fit for your company, remove them from the environment. This may seem harsh, but if you’ve given ample time for improvement and see none, these underperformers likely have no real means or ambitions to improve, and will drag down the quality of your business as a whole.

Retain the employees that perform at or above your expectations. Make sure they want to remain with your company, and remove those that have no interest in becoming better employees no matter their position.


The lower your overall employee turnover, the more money you save. Having a high employee turnover due to not following the tips above results in wasted time and money spent on training, loss of revenue, and more.

By following these business operations and management guidelines, you will minimize turnover and, more importantly, business profit losses.
